How we rank restaurants
Every restaurant gets a score from 0 to 10, calculated the same way for all of them. It is based on the opinions of thousands of people, not on a single source, and it does not depend on who pays.
How the score is made
A restaurant's score is based on two sources. Below you can see how much each one counts.
53%
What customers say on Google
The rating and number of reviews on Google Maps, written by customers after they ate there.
47%
Our readers' votes
Votes from people who ate there and tell us what they think here on the site.
If a place is missing one of the sources (for example, it has no votes yet), the score is calculated from the others only.
How we calculate it, in short
We collect the opinions
At regular intervals we collect the ratings and the number of reviews from Google. Each restaurant's page shows when we last updated them.
We take the number of reviews into account
A 4.9 based on 12 reviews deserves less trust than a 4.8 based on 2,000. That is why ratings backed by few reviews are pulled slightly towards the city average (in cities with few restaurants, towards the national average), while those with many reviews stay almost unchanged.
We bring everything to a 0 to 10 score
We turn stars into a score that is easy to compare: under 3 stars means 0, 4 stars means 5, and 5 stars means 10. This makes the difference between a good place and an excellent one easier to see.
We average it and build the ranking
We combine the opinions, taking into account how much each source counts, round to one decimal and order the restaurants in each city from the highest score to the lowest.
An example: why the number of reviews matters
Take two restaurants with almost the same rating on Google, but a very different number of reviews.
Restaurant A
4.8 stars, based on 2,140 reviews
8.9 / 10
With that many reviews, the score is reliable and changes very little.
Restaurant B
4.9 stars, based on 12 reviews
7.3 / 10
12 reviews do not weigh as much as 2,000, so the score stays close to the city average until the restaurant collects more reviews.
How we keep voting fair
Only users with a confirmed account can vote, and each one can vote for the same restaurant once every 90 days. Suspicious votes, for example many in a short time or from new accounts, are checked by our team and can be cancelled. Owners cannot vote for their own restaurant.
A place in the ranking cannot be bought
Nobody can pay to climb the ranking. Restaurants can complete their profile and reply to reviews, but the score is calculated the same way for all of them. A restaurant enters the ranking only after at least 20 reviews in total, so that it is not ranked on two or three reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Why not use only the Google rating?
Because a single source can be incomplete or biased. If we combine two kinds of opinions and take into account how many reviews stand behind each rating, the ranking comes out fairer.
When do the scores change?
The score is updated with every new vote and whenever the Google ratings change. A restaurant that receives many new reviews can change its place in the ranking.
What does “Promoted” mean?
Restaurants marked “Promoted” pay for a separate spot above the city ranking. It is an advertisement and we label it as such. Payment changes neither the score nor the place in the ranking.
Can a restaurant delete its negative reviews?
No. Restaurants can reply publicly, but they cannot delete or hide reviews. We step in only when the content is abusive.
How are the reviews from Google displayed?
With the author’s name, the date and a link to the original source, as the rules of the platform require.
Why do some restaurants have no score?
A restaurant enters the ranking after at least 20 reviews in total, across all sources. Until then, its page shows “-” instead of a score, so that it is not ranked on two or three opinions.
What happens to suspicious votes?
Votes that arrive in waves, from very new accounts or from the same connection, are held and checked by our team. Until they are checked they do not count towards the score. Fake ones are removed for good.
